Started by Dutch born Sabine Berkman, the Dutch School in Auckland (‘Nederlandse School Auckland’), aims to unite Dutch and New Zealand culture in a friendly educative environment. Cultural aspects of both countries are taught to the approximately 85 enrolled at the school. The lessons serve as an addition to regular education and recently the Dutch School was registered as a charitable trust.
“A lot of these kids are bilingual and some even trilingual. We think it’s fantastic that we can teach them about their heritage and give them an opportunity to keep up with their Dutch culture. Many of the kids visit Holland with their parents during holidays and it’s great that when they get back they can share what they’ve experienced, sharing stories of their opa’s en oma’, museums, etc.”
“It’s also really great to be able to see the kids grow. They start school at 4 years old and stay with us until they’re 12, so we really see them evolve. It also creates a sense of community, many of the parents for example, know each other very well.”
